Differential Side Oil Seal: Removal

  1. Lift up vehicle and drain transmission oil.
  2. Remove ball stud bolt and link nut. Separate suspension arm from knuckle. See Fig 1 .
  3. Disconnect drive shaft joint by following procedure;
    1. If removing left side axle shaft joint, pull out axle shaft joint so as to release snap ring fitting of joint spline at differential side using flat head rod or similar. Pushing knuckle portion outward, detach axle shaft at differential side. See Fig 2 .
    2. If removing right side axle shaft, drive out axle shaft joint so as to release snap ring fitting of joint spline at center shaft by using plastic hammer. After removing center bearing shaft support bolts, pull out center axle shaft from differential gear. See Fig 3 .
  4. Remove oil seal.
  5. Install a new oil seal until it becomes flush with case surface by using appropriate seal driver or hammer.
  6. NOTE: When installing oil seal, face its spring side inward.
  7. Apply grease to oil seal lip and at the same time check axle shaft where oil seal contacts and ensure of its smoothness. See Fig 4 .
  8. Insert axle shaft joint or center drive shaft to differential gear. Install center bearing support with right side axle shaft. See Fig 3 .
  9. CAUTION:
    • Be careful not to scratch oil seal lip with axle shaft joint while inserting.
    • Ensure to insert axle shaft joint fully and seat its snap ring as it was.
    • Do not hit joint boot with hammer or the like. Use hands only when inserting joint.
  10. Connect bolt stud with knuckle and fasten with bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Install stabilizer bar to suspension arm and fasten link nut to specification. See Fig 1 .
  12. Add oil as needed. See CHANGING FLUID  . Ensure that oil has been sealed with oil seal.
