Steering Wheel Turning Force

  1. Place vehicle on a level surface with steering wheel in straight-ahead position. Ensure tires are properly inflated. Start engine and let idle until P/S fluid temperature in reservoir is 122-140°F (50-60°C).
  2. Attach spring scale to steering wheel, as close to rim as possible. See Fig 1 . With engine idling, measure turning force. Turning force should be 8.8 lbs. (4.0 Kg). If turning force exceeds specification, repair or replace power steering rack and pinion assembly.
