Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0500 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0500 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect VSS connector. See Fig 1. Check VSS connector for poor connection. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary and retest system. If connection is okay, measure resistance between VSS terminals. Resistance should be 100-300 ohms. Measure resistance between each VSS terminal and ground. Resistance should be 1000 ohms. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace VSS.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check for damage, dirt and correct installation of VSS. Clean, repair or replace as necessary. If no problem is found, disconnect PCM 16-pin connector C22. Check PCM 16-pin harness connector C22 for poor connection. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If connection is okay, check for open or short to ground in Violet wire between PCM 16-pin connector C22 terminal No. 4 and VSS. See Figure. Also check for open or short to ground in Gray/Yellow wire between PCM 16-pin connector C22 terminal No. 12 and VSS. See WIRING DIAGRAM article. If wires are okay, problem is probably intermittent. System may be okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
