Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0136 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0136 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Inspect exhaust system for damage or leaks. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If exhaust system is okay, go to next step.
  3. Operate vehicle under normal driving conditions for 5 minutes. Observe HO2S No. 2 output voltage and short term fuel trim using DATA LIST mode on scan tool. Record readings. If HO2S No. 2 output voltage reading is less than 1.275 volts, go to step  5. If reading is 1.275 volts or more, check for open in Light Green/Black wire between HO2S No. 2 connector terminal No. 1 and PCM 22-pin connector C23 terminal No. 22, and on Yellow wire between HO2S No. 2 connector terminal No. 2 and PCM 22-pin connector C23 terminal No. 10. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step.
  4. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If wires are okay, check for faulty HO2S No. 2 and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
  5. If short term fuel trim varied between -20 and 20 percent, go to next step. If short term fuel trim does not vary between -20 and 20 percent, check fuel system operation. See DTC P0171: TOTAL FUEL TRIM IS GREATER THAN ALLOWED SPECIFICATION, OR P0172: TOTAL FUEL TRIM IS LESS THAN ALLOWED SPECIFICATION .
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S No. 2 connector and PCM 22-pin connector C23. Check for poor terminal contact at HO2S No. 2 connector and PCM 22-pin connector C23. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If connections are okay, check for open in Light Green/Black wire between HO2S No. 2 connector terminal No. 1 and PCM 22-pin connector C23 terminal No. 22, and in Yellow wire between HO2S No. 2 connector terminal No. 2 and PCM 22-pin connector C23 terminal No. 10. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If wires are okay, check for faulty HO2S No. 2. Repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
