Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST . If DTC P0500 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0500 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Test drive vehicle. Observe speedometer. If speedometer operates, go to next step. If speedometer does not operate, speedometer cable is disconnected or broken. Repair as necessary.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 16-pin connector C22. Check PCM 16-pin harness connector C22 for poor connection. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary and retest system. If connection is okay, connect ohmmeter between ground and PCM 16-pin harness connector C22 terminal No. 4 (Yellow/Green wire). See Figure. Raise and support vehicle. Block right front wheel from turning. Turn left front wheel slowly wile observing ohmmeter. Readings should toggle between zero and infinity a few times while wheel is turned one revolution. If readings are not as specified, go to next step. If readings are as specified, problem is probably intermittent. System may be okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If intermittent problem is not found, replace PCM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
  4. Remove instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect instrument cluster 13-pin connector G8. Connect ohmmeter between instrument cluster 13-pin connector G8 terminal No. 10 (Yellow/Green wire) and No. 4 (Black/Blue wire). See Fig 1. Turn speedometer cable input using a screwdriver. See Fig 2. Readings should toggle between zero and infinity 4 times for every complete screwdriver revolution. If readings are not as specified, replace speedometer. If readings are as specified, go to next step.
  5. Check for short or open in Yellow/Green wire between instrument cluster 13-pin connector G8 terminal No. 10 and PCM 16-pin connector C22 terminal No. 4. Also check for short or open in Black/Blue wire between instrument cluster 13-pin connector G8 terminal No. 4 and ground. Repair wires as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST .
