Clutch Start Switch (M/T)

CAUTION: After clutch start switch adjustment, check for correct plunger clearance between clutch pedal lever and body of clutch start switch when clutch pedal is fully depressed. If clutch pedal lever contacts body of clutch start switch, switch may be damaged internally. Clutch pedal travel may also be limited affecting clutch release and shifting functions.
NOTE: On all models except Swift, clutch start switch is located on bracket, above and inboard of clutch and brake pedals. See Fig 1. On Swift, clutch start switch is located above clutch pedal.
  1. Apply parking brake. Place gear shift lever in Neutral. Disconnect electrical connector from clutch start switch located on pedal bracket above clutch pedal (Swift) or on pedal bracket inboard of stoplight switch (all others). See Fig 1. On all models, inspect clutch start switch for damage and proper installation. Replace clutch start switch if damaged. If switch is okay, go to next step.
  2. Ensure clutch pedal is rigidly mounted. Check clutch pedal travel from rest position to fully depressed position. Ensure clutch pedal operates properly through entire pedal travel without binding, sticking or any obstructions. Repair clutch pedal assembly if necessary. If clutch pedal operates properly, go to next step.
  3. Loosen lock nut on clutch start switch. See Fig 2. Remove clutch start switch from pedal bracket. Screw clutch start switch about 1-2 turns into pedal bracket. Connect DVOM test leads to terminals of clutch start switch, and go to next step.
  4. Fully depress clutch pedal, then release and hold clutch pedal .6-1.2" (15-30 mm) from full dressed position. See Fig 2. While holding clutch pedal, slowly screw clutch start switch toward clutch pedal lever, just until continuity exists. Tighten clutch start switch lock nut, and go to next step.
  5. Ensure clutch pedal lever does not come in contact with body of clutch start switch at any time. While monitoring plunger of clutch start switch, slowly depress clutch pedal until fully depressed. Ensure proper clutch start switch plunger clearance exists with clutch pedal fully depressed. See PLUNGER CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS  table. See Fig 2. Adjust plunger clearance as necessary. If proper clutch start switch plunger clearance exists, go to next step.
  6. Ensure continuity exists across terminals of clutch start switch with clutch pedal fully depressed. While monitoring DVOM, ensure continuity does not exist after clutch pedal is released from fully depressed position about 1.5" (13 mm). If continuity is not as described, replace clutch start switch.
