Grid Filament Test

  1. With ignition switch in ON position and defogger switch activated, test filaments with voltmeter. Wrap negative probe of voltmeter with foil and press against filament. See Fig 1 .
  2. Attach positive probe of voltmeter to heat filament positive terminal. Slowly slide negative probe along filament from positive heat wire terminal to negative heat wire terminal. See Fig 2 .
  3. If voltage reads 4-6 volts at center of filament, wire is okay. If voltage reads zero volts at center of filament, wire is damaged between wire center and ground. If voltage reads 10 volts at center of filament, wire is damaged between wire center and positive end.
  4. If filament is okay, voltage will read 12 volts at negative end and decrease as probe is moved toward positive end. If voltmeter needle fluctuates, damaged area of filament has been located.
