Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If DTC P0118 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0118 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ECT parameter. If display reads -40°F (-40°C), go to next step. If display does not read -40°F (-40°C), problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Check for poor terminal contact at ECT sensor connector. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If terminal contact is okay, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Light Green/Red wire terminal of ECT sensor harness connector. Go to next step.
  4. If reading is about 4-6 volts, go to next step. If reading is not about 4-6 volts, check for open or short to power in Light Green/Red wire between ECT and ECM 28-pin connector C20 terminal No. 12. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. See Figure . Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, check for poor terminal contact at ECM 28-pin connector C20. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . If terminal contact is okay, replace ECM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  .
  5. Turn ignition off. Connect a fused jumper wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminals No. 1 (Light Green/Red wire) and No. 3 (Orange wire). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ECT parameter. If display reads 401°F (205°C), replace ECT sensor and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  . Go to next step.
  6. If display does not read 401°F (205°C), check for open in Orange wire between ECT and ECM 28-pin connector C20 terminal No. 27.
