Diagnosis & Repair Procedure
- Perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST
. If DTC P0500 is set, go to next step. If DTC P0500 is not set, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Test drive vehicle. Observe speedometer. If speedometer operates, go to next step. If speedometer does not operate, go to step 6
.
- Connect scan tool and test drive vehicle up to speeds of 50 MPH. If vehicle speedometer and scan tool display are not the same, turn ignition off and go to next step. If vehicle speedometer and scan tool display are the same, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Remove instrument panel. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin connector G19. Check for poor terminal contact at instrument cluster 16-pin connector G19. If poor terminal contact is found, repair as necessary and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST
. If terminal contact is okay, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster 16-pin connector G19 terminal No. 6 (Purple wire). See Fig 1
. Go to next step.
- If reading is 4-6 volts, replace speedometer. If reading is not 4-6 volts, check for open or short in Purple wire between instrument cluster 16-pin connector G19 and ECM 16-pin connector C20 terminal No. 4. See Figure
. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace ECM and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST
.
- Remove VSS from transaxle. See Fig 3
or Fig 4
. Inspect VSS gear for damage or binding. Replace as necessary. If VSS gear is okay, measure resistance between VSS sensor terminals. Resistance should be 300-450 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is not as specified, replace VSS and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST
. If resistance is as specified, go to next step.
- Disconnect ohmmeter. Rotate VSS gear by hand. Magnetic pulse resistance should be felt as VSS is rotated. If operation is not as specified, replace VSS. If operation is as specified, check for open or short to ground in Purple/Yellow wire between VSS and instrument cluster 16-pin connector G19 terminal No. 13. Also check for open in Black/Orange wire between instrument cluster 13-pin connector G20 terminal No. 11 and ground. See Fig 2
. Also check for open in Black wire between VSS and ground. Repair wires as necessary. If wires are okay, replace speedometer and go to DTC CONFIRMATION TEST
