Esteem 1.6L, Swift & VITARA 1.6L
- Remove battery ground cable. Remove valve cover. On Esteem, remove splash shield under right side of engine. Remove air cleaner cover and position air cleaner box to enable viewing of timing marks. On all models, align crankshaft pulley timing mark with TDC mark. Remove camshaft position sensor and check camshaft rotor gear position. See Fig 1
. If camshaft rotor gear position is as shown, No. 1 piston is at TDC, go to next step. If camshaft rotor gear position is not as shown, turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees) and realign crankshaft pulley timing mark with TDC mark. Camshaft rotor gear position should now be as shown. Go to next step.

- Check intake valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 2, and exhaust valve clearance of cylinders No. 1 and 3. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS
table. Turn crankshaft one complete revolution (360 degrees). Check intake valve clearance on cylinders No. 3 and 4, and exhaust valve clearance on cylinders No. 2 and 4.
- Measure valve clearance between camshaft and cam-riding-face of rocker arm using feeler gauge. Adjust valves by loosening lock nut and turning adjusting screw until clearance is as specified. Hold adjusting screw while tightening lock nut to 106 INCH lbs. (12 N.m). Recheck clearance. Reverse removal procedure.
