Removal (Tracker)

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 2 screws and 2 plastic retainers, and remove rear console box from interior floor. Remove 2 screws and 2 plastic retainers, and remove front console box from interior floor. Remove set screw, and remove transfer case gearshift lever control knob. Remove gearshift lever boot. Remove gearshift control lever from gearshift lever housing by pushing downward and turning counterclockwise 1/4 turn, then pulling upward. Disconnect 4WD switch and 4WD low switch harness connectors. See Figure .
  2. Remove 4 bolts from radiator fan shroud. Raise and support vehicle. Remove transfer case skid plate. Drain transfer case oil. Place index mark on front drive shaft flange and yoke for installation reference. Remove front drive shaft. Place index mark on rear drive shaft flange and yoke for installation reference. Remove rear drive shaft.
  3. Disconnect speedometer cable. Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) from transfer case. Remove VSS harness from crossmember.
  4. Support transfer case with jack. Remove 2 transfer case braces. Remove transfer case crossmember. Remove clamps and remove breather hose from gearshift lever housing. On manual transmission models, remove transmission gearshift lever housing from transmission.
  5. Remove 12 transfer case-to-transmission bolts, and slide transfer case from transmission output shaft and slowly lower transfer case from vehicle.
