Rear Axle Shaft: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 9 other vehicles, including the 2003 Suzuki XL-7, 2003 Suzuki Vitara, 2003 Suzuki Grand Vitara, 2002 Suzuki XL-7, and 2002 Suzuki Vitara. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Apply a small amount of lithium grease to the bearing retainer oil seal outer edge and press in using an oil seal installer. Be careful to press-fit in proper direction, and position. See Fig 1 .
  2. Aligning serrations between new stud bolts and flange, install new studs by tightening nut as shown. See Fig 2 .
  3. Install bearing retainer on shaft.
  4. Press-fit wheel bearing and retainer ring. See Fig 3 .
  5. On vehicles equipped with ABS, press-fit new sensor rotor. See Fig 4 .
  6. Apply lithium grease to axle shaft inner oil seal lip. See Fig 5 .
  7. Apply sealant to mating surface of bearing retainer with brake back plate.
  8. Install rear axle shaft to rear axle housing and tighten bearing retainer nuts to 17 Ft. Lbs (23 N.m).
  9. Tighten ABS wheel speed sensor bolt to 15.5 Ft Lbs (21 N.m).
  10. Refill rear differential with new differential gear oil. Install brake drum.
