Steering Knuckle: Removal

  1. Remove brake drum. See WHEEL BEARINGS . Remove brakeline from steering knuckle bracket. Disconnect brakeline from wheel cylinder, and plug all openings. Remove backing plate bolts. Remove backing plate. Place jack under lower control arm for support (control arm is spring loaded).
  2. Reference mark control rod toe-in alignment cam to mounting bracket for reassembly installation. Remove control rod from knuckle stud and inboard mounting bracket.
  3. Remove lower control arm-to-knuckle bolt. Remove knuckle-to-strut pinch bolt. Slide knuckle off strut. If strut will not come out of knuckle, slightly open slit of knuckle with a wedge. See Figure. Remove knuckle.
