Steering Wheel Turning Force

  1. Place vehicle on a level surface with steering wheel in straight-ahead position. Ensure tires are properly inflated. Start engine and let idle until fluid temperature in reservoir is 122-140°F (50-60°C).
  2. Attach spring scale to steering wheel, as close to rim as possible. With engine idling, measure turning force. On Esteem and Swift, turning force should be 8.8 lbs. (4.0 Kg). On Grand Vitara and Vitara, turning force should be 11 lbs. (5.0 Kg). If turning force exceeds specification, repair or replace power steering rack and pinion assembly.
