Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Test drive vehicle. Using scan tool, select DATA LIST. While decelerating from 35 MPH to zero, monitor all wheel speeds. If any wheel speed is erratic or intermittent, go DTC 21-24 (as applicable). See ABS DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX  table. If wheel speeds appear acceptable, go to next step.
  2. Stop engine. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS. Select MANUAL CONTROL function. Select LEFT FRONT MOTOR APPLY function and apply motor. Apply firm pressure on brake pedal. Select LEFT FRONT MOTOR RELEASE function and release motor. If brake pedal falls, go to next step. If brake pedal did not fall, go to step  6 .
  3. Release brake pedal. Using scan tool, select LEFT FRONT SOLENOID APPLY function, and energize solenoid. Apply firm pressure on brake pedal. If pedal falls, go to step  5 . If pedal did not fall, go to next step.
  4. Maintain firm pressure on brake pedal. Using scan tool, command left front solenoid OFF. If pedal falls, system is currently functioning correctly. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If pedal did not fall, go to next step.
  5. Switch left front solenoid with right front solenoid and repeat step 4)  . If brake pedal falls, perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF function using scan tool and replace hydraulic modulator. See ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (HYDRAULIC MODULATOR/MOTOR PACK)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If pedal did not fall, replace solenoid that failed step 3)  .
  6. If brake pedal did not move, go to next step. If brake pedal rose, repair crossed wires to left front ABS motor circuit.
  7. Using scan tool, perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF function. Separate motor pack from hydraulic modulator. See ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (HYDRAULIC MODULATOR/MOTOR PACK)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Grasp left front gear on hydraulic modulator and attempt to move gear in either direction. If gear can be moved by hand, replace motor pack. If gear can not be moved by hand, replace hydraulic modulator. After all diagnosis is complete, clear DTC and test drive vehicle for 3 drive cycles to verify that DTC does not reset. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  .
