Diagnostic Procedure
- Turn ignition on. Pump brake pedal. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS, then MANUAL CONTROL function. Select RIGHT FRONT MOTOR APPLY function. While monitoring commanded current and feedback current on scan tool, apply motor. If commanded and feedback current are both 10 amps, go to next step. If commanded and feedback current are not both 10 amps, go to step 3 .
- Apply firm pressure on brake pedal. Using scan tool, select RIGHT FRONT MOTOR RELEASE function. While monitoring commanded current and feedback current on scan tool, release motor. If brake pedal falls and both commanded and feedback current values are 6 amps, go to step 4 . If brake pedal did not fall and both commanded and feedback current values are not 6 amps, go to next step.
- If commanded current or feedback current was zero amps, replace EBCM. If commanded current or feedback current was not zero amps, go to step 5 .
- With firm pressure applied to brake pedal, use scan tool to select RIGHT FRONT MOTOR APPLY function and apply motor to move piston to top of bore. If brake pedal rises, malfunction is intermittent, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If brake pedal does not rise, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS and perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF function. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove 6-pin harness connector from motor pack and 2-pin harness connectors from both ABS solenoids. Separate motor pack from hydraulic modulator. See ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY (HYDRAULIC MODULATOR/MOTOR PACK) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove gear cover and check for stripped gear on motor pack (motor pack gear is smaller of 2 gears). If motor pack gear is stripped, replace motor pack. If motor pack gear is not stripped, go to next step.
- Inspect gears on hydraulic modulator (modulator is unit with 3 large gears). If larger gear is stripped or damaged, replace hydraulic modulator. If larger gear is not stripped or damaged, go to next step.
- Reconnect all electrical harness connectors. Securely position hydraulic modulator assembly with cover removed so gear set can be observed. Exercise care not to damage gear set or allow hydraulic modulator to move while performing this test. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS. Select MANUAL CONTROL function, and then select RIGHT FRONT MOTOR APPLY function. While observing gear set, apply motor. Next, select RIGHT FRONT MOTOR RELEASE function. While observing gear set, release motor. Again select RIGHT FRONT MOTOR APPLY function and apply motor. If gear set moves in both directions for at least one revolution, go to next step. If gear set does not move in both directions for at least one revolution, replace motor pack.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect EBCM 8-pin harness connector and motor pack 6-pin harness connector. Measure resistance of Brown wire between motor pack 6-pin harness connector terminal No. 2 and EBCM 8-pin harness connector terminal No. 5. If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 1.5 ohms, repair high resistance in Brown wire.
- Measure resistance of Brown/Black wire between motor pack 6-pin harness connector terminal No. 1 and EBCM 8-pin harness connector terminal No. 6. If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 1.5 ohms, repair high resistance in Brown/Black wire.
- Measure resistance between terminals No. 1 and 2 on motor pack. If resistance is less than 1.5 ohms, replace hydraulic modulator. If resistance is not less than 1.5 ohms, replace motor pack.
