DTC P0505: Idle Air Control (IAC) System Malfunction (Esteem 1.8L)

  1. Using scan tool, check idle speed/idle air control. Check vehicle speed sensor and air intake system. Check EGR operation, EVAP system, accessory engine load and engine compression.
  2. Check idle air control valve operation. Disconnect IAC valve connector. Check for good terminal contact. Repair as necessary. If terminal contact is okay, measure resistance between IAC valve terminals. About 8.6-10.6 ohms should be present. Measure continuity between IAC valve terminal and valve body. No continuity should be present. measurements are to specification, go to step  4 . If measurements are not to specification, replace IAC valve.
  3. Using scan tool, check Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal on scan tool while driving vehicle. If vehicle speed is displayed on scan tool, problem is intermittent. Replace PCM and recheck. If vehicle speed is not displayed on scan tool, go to DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS) MALFUNCTION (ESTEEM)  .
  4. Check air intake system for obstruction or leakage. Repair as necessary. If air intake system is okay, check fast idle control system. Measure plunger length at fast idle control cam. Plunger length should be 1.048-1.078" (26.6-27.4 mm). Repair as necessary. If plunger length is okay, go to next step.
  5. Check idle air control valve by starting and operating engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Check if idle speed increases or decreases when jumper wire is connected between ground and PCM connector C20-28 or when IAC valve connector is disconnected. If idle speed changes, go to next step. If idle speed does not change, check EGR, EVAP, accessory engine load, engine compression, and idle air adjustment. Repair as necessary. If all components are okay, replace PCM.
  6. Disconnect IAC valve connector. Check for good terminal contact. Repair as necessary. Measure resistance between IAC valve terminals. Resistance between 2 terminals should be 8.6-10.6 ohms. No continuity should be present between IAC valve terminals and valve body. If measurements are not to specification, replace IAC valve. If measurements are to specification, reconnect IAC valve connector. Ensure engine is at operating temperature. Disconnect IAC valve connector and check idle speed. Connect 12-volt battery to IAC valve. Recheck idle speed. If idle speed increases, IAC valve is okay. If idle speed does not increase, replace IAC valve.
