DTC P0480: Radiator Cooling Fan Control Circuit Malfunction (Esteem 1.8L)

  1. Turn ignition on. With coolant temperature less than 200°F (93°C), measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and PCM 35-pin harness connector E92 terminal No. 3 (Orange/Black wire). Reading should be 10-14 volts. With coolant temperature greater than 208°F (98°C), reading should be 0-2 volts. If voltages are as specified, problem is intermittent or due to a faulty PCM. Go to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If voltages are not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove radiator cooling fan relay located in engine compartment relay/fuse block. Measure resistance between cooling fan relay terminals No. 3 (Black/White wire) and No. 4 (Pink/Green wire). If resistance is 70-110 ohms, check Black/White, Pink/Green, or Orange/Black wires for an open or short circuit. If resistance is not 70-110 ohms, replace radiator cooling fan relay. Retest system.
