DTC P0117: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Low Input

  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Select ECT parameter. If display reads 401°F (205°C) on Esteem 1.8L or 246°F (119°C) on all others, turn ignition off and go to next step. If display reading is not 401°F (205°C) on Esteem 1.8L or 246°F (119°C) on all others, check for an intermittent problem. Go to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector located near coolant outlet. Turn ignition on. If display reading on scan tool changes to -40°F (-40°C), replace ECT sensor. If reading is not -40°F (-40°C), check Light Green/Red wire (Esteem) or Gray/White wire (Swift) for short to ground. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace PCM. Retest system.
