4-Wheel Anti-Lock: Description

NOTE: ABS actuator assembly may also be known as ABS control module or hydraulic unit.

Vitara is equipped with an ABS Type 1 anti-lock brake systems. ABS system uses electric motors to modulate pressure control pistons. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) operates on each front and rear wheel. ABS system consists of Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), 4 wheel speed sensors, actuator assembly, "G" sensor (4WD only) and brake switch. See Fig 1 . ABS actuator assembly (hydraulic unit) incorporates EBCM, pump motor/solenoid relay and Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV).

EBCM uses signals from wheel speed sensor to determine when a wheel is about to lock and adjusts hydraulic pressure to maintain optimum braking. ABS cannot increase brake pressure greater than master cylinder pressure generated by driver. ABS cannot apply brakes by itself.

NOTE: For more information on brake system, see appropriate DISC & DRUM article.
