Component Tests and General Diagnostics

INITIALIZATION

The EBCM performs an Initialization test at the beginning of each drive cycle. The initialization sequence cycles the relay, solenoids and pump motor for 1.5 seconds to check component operation. If any error is detected, the EBCM will set the applicable Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The initialization sequence may be heard and felt while it is taking place, and is considered a part of NORMAL SYSTEM OPERATION.
If a brake switch input is not seen (foot off the brake) by the EBCM, the initialization will occur immediately after start up. If the brake switch input is seen (foot on the brake) during start up, the initialization will not occur until either the brake switch input is not seen (foot removed f from the brake), or the vehicle speed reaches 16 kph (110 mph). This interruption of initialization is used since brake pedal feedback on start up may cause an unwarranted complaint of brake pedal feedback upon startup.

TIRES AND ABS

Spare Tire
Using the compact spare tire supplied with the vehicle will not affect the operation of the ABS. The EBCM can compensate for this smaller tire. However, increased stopping distance may occur due to reduced tread depth.

Replacement Tires
Tire size is important for proper performance of the ABS. Replacement tires should be the same size, load range and construction as the original tires. Replace tires in axle sets and only with tires of the same tire performance criteria (TPC) specification number. Use of any other size or type may seriously affect the ABS operation.
