DTC P0505: Idle Air Control (IAC) System Malfunction

  1. Check operation of IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. If not using scan tool, go to IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. If using scan tool, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start and warm engine to operating temperature. Select MISC TEST on scan tool and command RPM to increase and decrease. If IAC valve operates as specified, problem is intermittent or due to a faulty PCM. Go to INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If IAC valve does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect IAC valve harness connector and check for poor connection. Disconnect PCM 22-pin harness connector "C" and check connection at terminal No. 2. If connections are okay, check wires from IAC valve to PCM, main relay and ground for an open or short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and retest system. If wiring is okay, replace IAC valve and retest system.
