Diagnosis & Repair Procedure
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Select ECT-1 sensor parameter on scan tool. Warm engine to operating temperature. Select ECT-2 sensor parameter on scan tool. If difference between ECT-1 and ECT-2 is less than 1°F (1°C), go to step 3 . If difference between ECT-1 and ECT-2 is more than 1°F (1°C), go to next step.
- Check thermostat operation. If heater takes a long time to become effective, or coolant flows into radiator on cold start, remove thermostat for inspection. Replace as necessary and retest system. If thermostat operates properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector. Turn ignition on. Scan tool should display -40°F (-40°C). Jumper ECT sensor harness connector terminals together. Scan tool should display 401°F (205°C). If scan tool display is as specified, go to next step. If scan tool display is not as specified, check for open or short in Orange/Black wire or Gray/Yellow wire between ECT sensor and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If wiring is okay, replace PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Retest system.
- Test ECT sensor. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Replace ECT sensor if resistance is not as specified. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. If ECT sensor tests okay, replace PCM. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. Retest system.
