Steering Gear: Inspection

  1. Check all components for damage or deterioration. Check for play in tie rod end ball joints. Check pinion teeth surfaces for wear or damage.
  2. Using "V" blocks and dial indicator, check rack for runout and excessive tooth wear. Runout must not exceed .016" (.40 mm). Inspect needle bearing and rack bushing for wear. If needle bearing requires replacement, use Bearing Remover (09921-20200) to remove needle bearing from housing.
    CAUTION: DO NOT pull rack bushing from housing while clamping housing in a vise. Use bushing remover to prevent separating tube from rest of housing.
  3. If rack bushing requires replacement, remove rack bushing retaining snap ring. Using Bushing Remover (09944-48210), remove rack bushing from housing.
CAUTION: Inside diameter of rack bushing is coated with special coating. DO NOT damage coating when installing bushing. Before reassembly, coat all components with light coat of grease.
