DTC 42: Rear Expansion Spring Brake (ESB) Will Not Hold Motor: Description

EBCM detects that ESB could not hold piston in home position.

  1. Turn ignition on. Pump brake pedal. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS. Using manual control, select rear motor apply. Apply motor. Wait 5 seconds and then apply firm pressure on brake pedal. If brake pedal falls, replace motor pack. If brake pedal does not fall, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect EBCM harness connectors and motor pack connector. Measure resistance of Pink wire between terminal No. 4 on ABS actuator motor pack harness connector and terminal No. 3 on EBCM 8-pin harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair high resistance in Pink wire.
  3. Measure resistance of Pink/Black wire between terminal No. 3 on ABS actuator motor pack harness connector and terminal No. 4 on EBCM 8-pin harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair high resistance in Pink/Black wire.
  4. Measure resistance between terminals No. 3 and 4 on ABS actuator motor pack component connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace motor pack.
  5. Inspect EBCM and motor pack harness connectors. Ensure connectors are clean and tight. Repair as needed. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  6. Reconnect all connectors. Test drive vehicle for 2 drive cycles. See CLEARING CODES . If DTC 42 resets, replace EBCM. If DTC 42 does not reset, system is currently operating correctly. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
