Direct Clutch: Disassembly

  1. Prior to disassembly, place direct clutch drum on center support. Using a dial indicator and compressed air, measure direct clutch piston stroke while applying 57-114 psi (4-8 kg/cm2 ) to OD case oil hole. See Figure . See DIRECT CLUTCH PISTON STROKE SPECIFICATIONS  table. If piston stroke is not as specified, inspect discs. Selective clutch backing plates are available in the following sizes to restore piston to standard stroke: .141" (3.6 mm), .149" (3.8 mm) and .157" (4.0 mm). Remove direct clutch from center support.
    DIRECT CLUTCH PISTON STROKE SPECIFICATIONS

    Application Clearance - In. (mm)
    1997-99 Chevrolet/Geo, Kia & 1997-98 Suzuki .008-.069 (.20-1.75)
    1999 Suzuki

  2. Remove snap ring, flange, discs and plates. See Figure . Note location and number of components. Using appropriate spring compressor, compress piston return spring and remove snap ring. Remove piston return spring.
  3. Place direct clutch drum on center support. Hold direct clutch piston with hand, and apply compressed air to center support to remove direct clutch piston. Apply compressed air to appropriate hole in center support to remove piston subassembly from direct clutch piston. See Figure . Remove "O" rings from piston(s).
