Differentials & Axle Shafts: Description

NOTE: This article covers both front and rear differentials in addition to rear axle shafts. For front axle shafts see AXLE SHAFTS - FRONT article.

Front differential assembly uses a hypoid bevel pinion and ring gear mounted in an aluminum housing. Rear differential assembly uses a steel housing. Bevel ring gear and pinion front and rear differential assemblies are not interchangeable. Reduction ratio for manual transmission and automatic transmission vehicles is different.
