DTC P0461: Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Performance

NOTE: If DTCs P0461 and P0463 are set together, diagnose DTC P0463 first.
  1. Turn ignition on. On models equipped with 3-speed automatic or manual transmission, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Red wire) at 16-pin PCM harness connector. On models equipped with 4-speed automatic transmission, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 3 (Yellow/Red wire) at 12-pin PCM harness connector. Note voltage. Add one gallon (3.8L) of fuel to tank. If voltage decreases, go to next step. If voltage increases, go to step 3).
  2. Check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article. Repair as necessary and retest system.
  3. If voltage is 0-1 volt, ensure fuel tank is neither full or empty. Adjust if necessary and go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, replace fuel level sensor and retest system.
  4. Observe fuel gauge. If gauge reads EMPTY, repair open in Yellow/Red wire between fuel gauge and PCM. If gauge reads actual fuel level, repair open in Yellow/Red wire or poor connection at PCM. If gauge reads FULL, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect fuel gauge harness connector. If fuel gauge reading drops to EMPTY, replace fuel level sensor. If fuel gauge reading does not change, check Yellow/Red wire for a short to ground. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace fuel level gauge and retest system.
