Esteem, Sidekick 1.6L, Swift & X-90

  1. Ensure transmission is in Neutral or Park. Set parking brake. On Esteem, remove air cleaner cover to gain access to view timing marks. On all models, inspect crankshaft pulley timing mark and timing mark indicator on timing belt cover. Clean marks as required. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Attach timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS  table under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
CAUTION: Driving with jumper wire installed in test connector will damage catalytic converter.
  2. Connect a fused jumper wire between terminals "D" (ground) and "E" (test switch) of test connector. See Figure, Figure or Figure. Aim timing light at timing cover timing marks. If ignition timing is not within specification, check the following:
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor
    • Crankshaft Timing Belt Pulley
    • Throttle Position Sensor
    • Test Switch Signal Circuit
    • Vehicle Speed Sensor
    • Timing Belt Cover Installation
  3. Disconnect jumper from diagnostic connector. With engine idling and diagnostic connector not grounded, check that timing is approximately 9°-15° BTDC. There should be a constant variation in timing within a few degrees of 9°-15° indicating proper operation of electronic timing system. Also, check that timing advances when increasing engine speed. If results are not satisfactory, check CKP sensor, test switch terminal circuit and PCM.
