DTC P0720: Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit Fault: Testing

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM harness connector. On 1.6L models, using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 1 (White wire) and terminal No. 9 (Black wire). On 1.8L models, using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 3 (White wire) and terminal No. 4 (Orange wire). On all models, if resistance is 387-473 ohms, go to step  5 . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect VSS (transmission). Using a DVOM, measure resistance between VSS terminals (sensor side). If resistance is 387-473 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace VSS.
  3. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 9 (Orange wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 4 (Orange wire) on 1.8L and VSS harness connector terminal No. 1 (Orange wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in Orange wire between VSS and PCM.
  4. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 1 (White wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 3 (White wire) on 1.8L and VSS harness connector terminal No. 2 (White wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in White wire between VSS and PCM.
  5. Reconnect all harness connectors. Clear DTC. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Road test vehicle and recheck for DTC. If DTC resets, replace PCM. If DTC does not reset, fault is not present at this time. Check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
