DTC P0705: Transmission Range (Tr) Sensor Circuit Fault: Testing
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 12 (Green wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 17 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L while moving gear selector through all gear ranges. If reading is battery voltage in "D" range, and less than one volt in any other range, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step 7 .
- Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 10 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 7 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L while moving gear selector through all gear ranges. If reading is battery voltage in "L" range, and less than one volt in any other range, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step 11 .
- Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 13 (Orange/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 33 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L while moving gear selector through all gear ranges. If reading is battery voltage in "N" range, and less than one volt in any other range, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step 15 .
- Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 11 (Green/Red wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) on 1.8L while moving gear selector through all gear ranges. If reading is battery voltage in "2" range, and less than one volt in any other range, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step 19 .
- Inspect PCM harness connector for poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary and retest. If contacts are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Reconnect PCM harness connector. Clear DTC. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Road test vehicle and recheck for DTC. If DTC P0705 resets, replace PCM. If DTC P0705 does not reset, fault is not present at this time. Check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TR switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 12 (Green wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 17 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L. If reading is one volt or less, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair appropriate wire for a short to power between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 12 (Green wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 17 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair appropriate wire for a short to ground between TR switch and PCM. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 12 (Green wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 17 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 9 (Green wire on 1.6L; Yellow/Green wire on 1.8L). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in appropriate wire between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 6 (Yellow wire). If reading is 11-14 volts, check TR switch for proper adjustment. See ADJUSTMENTS in appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. If adjustment is okay, replace TR switch. If reading is not as specified, repair open in Yellow wire between TR switch and TURN BACK fuse (15-amp).
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TR switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 10 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 7 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L. If reading is one volt or less, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair appropriate wire for a short to power between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 10 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 7 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair Green/Blue wire for a short to ground between TR switch and PCM. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 10 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E174 terminal No. 7 (Green/Blue wire) on 1.8L and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 5 (Yellow/Blue wire on 1.6L; Green/Blue wire on 1.8L). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in appropriate wire between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 6 (Yellow wire). If reading is 11-14 volts, check TR switch for proper adjustment. See ADJUSTMENTS in appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. If adjustment is okay, replace TR switch. If reading is not as specified, repair open in Yellow wire between TR switch and TURN BACK fuse (15-amp).
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TR switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector terminal No. 22 (Orange/Blue wire). If reading is one volt or less, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair Orange/Blue wire for a short to power between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 13 (Orange/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 33 (Orange/Blue wire) on 1.8L. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair appropriate wire for a short to ground between TR switch and PCM. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 13 (Orange/Blue wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 33 (Orange/Blue wire) on 1.8L and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 10 (Blue/Green wire on 1.6L; Orange/Blue wire on 1.8L). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in appropriate wire between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 6 (Yellow wire). If reading is 11-14 volts, check TR switch for proper adjustment. See ADJUSTMENTS in appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. If adjustment is okay, replace TR switch. If reading is not as specified, repair open in Yellow wire between TR switch and TURN BACK fuse (15-amp).
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TR switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 11 (Green/Red wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) on 1.8L. If reading is one volt or less, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair appropriate wire for a short to power between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition off. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 11 (Green/Red wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) on 1.8L. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair appropriate wire for a short to ground between TR switch and PCM. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Using a DVOM, measure resistance between PCM harness connector E173 terminal No. 11 (Green/Red wire) on 1.6L or PCM harness connector E172 terminal No. 19 (Green/Orange wire) on 1.8L and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 4 (Yellow/Green wire on 1.6L; Green/Orange wire on 1.8L). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in appropriate wire between TR switch and PCM.
- Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and TR switch harness connector terminal No. 6 (Yellow wire). If reading is 11-14 volts, check TR switch for proper adjustment. See ADJUSTMENTS in appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. If adjustment is okay, replace TR switch. If reading is not as specified, repair open in Yellow wire between TR switch and TURN BACK fuse (15-amp).
