DTC P1715: Park Neutral Position (PNP) Switch Circuit Malfunction

NOTE: DTC P1715 applies only to models equipped with 3-speed automatic transmission.
  1. Turn ignition on. Using DVOM, measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 22 (Black/Red wire) at 22-pin PCM harness connector with gearshift lever in Park and Neutral. If voltage is zero volts in both gear positions, leave DVOM connected and go to next step. If voltage is not zero volts, repair open in Black/Red wire and retest system.
  2. Using DVOM, measure voltage with gearshift lever in "R", "D", "2" and "L" positions. If voltage is 10-14 volts, check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article. If voltage is not as specified, check transmission range switch. See appropriate TRANSMISSION SERVICE & REPAIR article. Repair as necessary. If transmission range switch is okay, go to next step.
  3. Check for a short to ground in Black/Red wire between PCM and transmission range switch. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace PCM and retest system.
