Worm Shaft Turning Torque

  1. Ensure worm shaft thrust play is not excessive. Set steering gear to on-center position. To position steering gear on-center (straight ahead position) turn worm gear lock-to-lock and count number of turns. Divide number of turns by 2.
  2. Connect Torque Check Socket (09944-18211) and INCH-lb. torque wrench to worm shaft. Shaft should start to move with less than 11 INCH lbs. (1.2 N.m) of torque applied. If starting torque is not within specification, loosen or tighten adjusting screw and recheck. Check turning torque through entire range of operation. Operating torque should be less than starting torque.
