Electronic Ignition System

NOTE: Esteem, Sidekick 1.8L and Swift use a distributorless ignition system. Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is attached to cylinder head. See INPUT DEVICES  .

The electronic ignition system consists of a distributor (except Esteem, Sidekick 1.8L and Swift) which utilizes a Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor to produce ignition pulses. Ignition pulses are sent to PCM, which advances or retards ignition timing according to information from various sensors.

Ignition spark is achieved by PCM triggering igniter and in turn igniter grounding and opening ignition coil circuit. Power for ignition coil and ignitor is provided from fuse box 15-amp fuse (20-amp on Esteem), which receives power when ignition is turned on.
