Ignition Timing

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Suzuki Sidekick. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Verify that increasing engine speed advances ignition timing.
  1. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Ensure all accessories are off and idle speed is within specification. Adjust idle speed first if it is not within specification. See IDLE SPEED  under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE.
CAUTION: Driving with jumper wire installed in test connector will damage catalytic converter.
  2. Connect terminals No. 4 (Black wire) and No. 5 (Blue/Red wire) of White test connector, located next to left strut tower. See Fig 1 . Aim timing light at timing cover timing marks. If ignition timing is not within specification, loosen Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor hold-down screws and rotate sensor to obtain correct ignition timing. See IGNITION TIMING  table. Tighten CMP sensor hold-down screws and recheck ignition timing.
