CONDITION

The automatic transmission shift lever appears to be in Park position, but can easily be moved from the Park position without the use of the key, the transmission lever detent button, or depressing the service brake pedal. If the shift lever should come out of Park while the vehicle is parked on a non-level surface, the vehicle could begin to roll and a crash could occur without prior warning.

CAUSE

The shift lever park lock mechanism can become bent or distorted.

CORRECTION

Replace the complete shift lever assembly with a new modified assembly as described in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

All 1997 Swifts with automatic transmissions built in CAMI up to and including the following Vehicle Identification Numbers: 2S2AB21H_V6600001 to 2S2AB21H_V6603485

REPAIR PROCEDURE

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

  1. Remove the six center console screws.
  2. Remove the center console.
  3. Unsnap the shifter indicator plate. While moving up towards the selector knob, disconnect the indicator light.
  4. Disconnect the shift selector electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the shift select cable and the park lock cable from the shift selector.
  6. Remove the cable bracket bolt (1). Disconnect the park lock cable end (3) from the key release cam (2) and move the cables clear. See Fig 1 .
  7. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  8. Remove all four of the shifter assembly retaining nuts (1). Lower the vehicle. See Fig 2 .
  9. Remove the shift selector from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the two selector knob screws (2) and selector knob (3) from the lever. Fig 2 .
  11. Remove the shift indicator plate (4) from the selector. Fig 2 .

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

NOTE: THE NEW SHIFTER ASSEMBLY IS SHIPPED WITH A RED CAM ALIGNMENT PIN WHICH MUST NOT BE REMOVED UNTIL THE SHIFTER IS COMPLETELY INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. DO NOT REMOVE THIS CAM ALIGNMENT PIN UNTIL DIRECTED TO DO SO IN THE SERVICE PROCEDURE.
  1. Install the shift indicator plate to the replacement selector.
  2. Install the selector knob and both screws to the selector lever.
  3. Install the shift selector assembly to the vehicle.
  4. Raise the vehicle and install the retaining nuts. Torque to 16 N-m (12 ft.lbs). Lower the vehicle.
  5. Install and connect shift select cable to the shift selector.
  6. Connect the park lock cable (3) and install the cable bracket (1), adjust the cable as necessary. Tighten the cable bracket bolt (1) to 11 N-m (8 ft.lbs), See Fig 1 .
  7. Remove the red cam alignment pin only after assembly and adjustment of the park lock cable.
  8. Connect the shift selector electrical connector,
    NOTE: While assembling the shift indicator plate to the shift selector assembly in the next step, remember to connect the light.
  9. Connect the shift indicator plate to the shift selector assembly and firmly snap into place.
  10. Install the center console cover and the six console screws. Tighten screws until firmly driven and seated being careful not to strip them.
  11. Open the hood and clean an unused portion near the top center of the hood lock member to remove any oil, grease, or dirt residue. See Fig 3 .
  12. Affix the S7 campaign sticker to the clean dry surface.
