CONDITION
Change in A/T shift lock solenoid assembly.
CAUSE
Factory modification.
CORRECTION
When replacing this assembly, please use the part numbers and installation instructions as listed in this bulletin.
SERVICE INFORMATION
This bulletin is to inform you of the following modification which has been carried out since March 1997 production.
The following modifications have been made to the shift lock solenoid assembly:
- The shape of the shift lock plate (cam) was modified to improve shift lock release operation.
- A lock pin was added to the shift lock solenoid assembly as a spare part. The lock pin holds the key release cam into position to facilitate the installation of the interlock cable.
When replacing the shift lock solenoid assembly, please use the part numbers and installation procedures as listed in this bulletin.

SERVICING
When installing or adjusting the new shift lock solenoid assembly, select lever, or brake interlock cable, please follow the instructions as listed in this bulletin.
AFTER installing the new shift lock solenoid assembly, be sure to remove the lock pin.
SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID (IN SELECTOR)
REMOVAL
See Fig 2 for shift lock solenoid assembly screws.
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
- Remove the center console.
- Place the shift selector lever in the "N" position.
- Remove the illumination lamp socket from the select indicator.
- Remove the select indicator from the selector housing and move it out of the way.
- Disconnect the connector for the illumination lamp and shift lock solenoid.
- Disconnect the interlock cable end from the key interlock cam of the selector.
- Remove the shift lock solenoid assembly from the housing.
INSTALLATION
See Fig 3 for shift lock solenoid assembly, lock pin and spring screw.
- Loosen the location spring screw.
- With the selector lever in the "N" position, install the solenoid assembly to the housing.NOTE: The new shift lock solenoid assembly is shipped from the factory with the release cam held into place by the lock pin. DO NOT remove the lock pin in this step.
See Fig 4 for location spring, guide groove, screw, interlock cable and special tool or lock pin.
- Align the location spring end with the guide groove and tighten the spring screw securely.
- Apply grease to the guide grooves and detent pin.
- If the lock pin was removed, align the release cam by inserting the lock pin or a special tool into the holes in the cam and solenoid bracket.
- Connect the interlock cable end to the cam, referring to steps 5 and 6 of the "Brake (Key) Interlock Cable Installation."
- Remove the lock pin or special tool from the key release cam.
- Check that the key release cam and interlock cable are operating properly, referring to steps 7 and 8 of the "Interlock Cable Installation".
- Reconnect the electrical connectors to the shift solenoid and illumination lamp.
- Reinstall the select indicator and center console.
- Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
- Check that the brake (key) interlock system is operating properly.
BRAKE (KEY) INTERLOCK CABLE
REMOVAL
See Fig 5 for interlock cable, screw and release shaft.
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and disarm the air bag system, referring to the section entitled, "Disabling Air Bag System" on Section 9J of the service manual.
- Remove the steering column hole cover and steering joint cover.
- Disconnect the steering shaft upper joint bolt and steering column mounting bolts and nuts.CAUTION: Make sure that the top bolts of the steering shaft joint are tight before loosening the steering column mounting bolts and/or nuts. Otherwise, damage to the shaft joint bearing may occur.
See Fig 6 for cable bracket bolt, key release cam, cable end and cam boss.
- With the ignition switch in the "ACC" position, remove the interlock cable clamp screw at the ignition switch and disconnect the interlock cable from the release shaft.
- Remove the center console.
- While pressing the claws of the release cam boss together, remove the cable bracket bolt and disconnect the cable end from the key release cam boss. Be careful NOT to damage the claws of the release cam.
- Remove the interlock cable.
INSTALLATION
- Install the interlock cable. See Fig 7 .
- With the ignition key in the "ACC" position, connect the cable end to the steering lock and tighten the cable clamp screw securely. See Fig 8 . Tightening Torque: (a): 2 N.m, (0.2 kg-m, 1.5 ft-lb)
- With the lock plate manually moved towards the front side of the vehicle, shift the selector lever to the "N" position.
- Align the holes on the key release cam and solenoid bracket. Insert the special tool into the aligned holes to keep them from moving. See Fig 9 . Special Tool: (A): 09925-78210 (6 mm)
- Connect the cable end to the key release cam.
- With the cable bracket pushed in the direction of the arrow by spring force, tighten the cable bracket bolt. See Fig 9 . Tightening Torque: 4(b): 5-7 N.m (0.5 - 0.7 kg-m, 4.0 - 5.0 ft-lb)
- Remove the special tool and turn the ignition switch the "ACC" position.
- With the selector lever in the "P" position and the shift lock solenoid lock plate moved towards the front of the vehicle, check that the key release cam moves smoothly by depressing the selector lever release button. See Fig 10 .
- With the selector lever in the "P" position, turn the ignition key to the "ACC" position. Make sure that the ignition key can be turned from the "ACC" position to the "LOCK" position.
- With the selector lever in the "P" position, grab hold of the selector lever and depress the selector lever release button. Make sure that the ignition key CANNOT be turned from the "ACC" position to the "LOCK" position.
- Install the steering column, referring to Section 3C1 in the service manual.
- Install the steering column hole cover and steering joint cover.
- Reconnect the negative cable to the battery and enable the air bag system, referring to "Enabling Air Bag System" in Section 9J of the service manual.
ADJUSTMENT
- Remove the center console and loosen the cable bracket bolt.
- Turn the ignition key to the "ACC" position.
- Adjust the cable according to steps 3 and 6-10.
MANUAL SELECTOR ASSEMBLY
REMOVAL
- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
- Remove the center console.
- Disconnect the illumination lamp and shift lock solenoid connectors.
- Disconnect the-interlock cable from the key interlock cam of the selector assembly. See Fig 11 .
- Disconnect the select cable from the lever of the selector assembly. See Fig 11 .
- Raise the vehicle and remove the selector lever housing nuts. See Fig 12 .
- Remove the selector assembly from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
- Install the selector lever assembly into the vehicle.NOTE: The new shift lock solenoid assembly is shipped from the factory with the release cam held into place by the lock pin. See Fig 13 . DO NOT remove the lock pin in this step.
- Tighten the housing nut to the specified torque. See Fig 14 . Tightening Torque: (a): 18 - 22 N.m, (1.8 - 2.2 kg-m, 13.5 - 15.5 ft-lb)
- Connect the select cable end to the selector assembly lever.
- With the lock plate moved towards the front of the vehicle, shift the selector lever to the "N" position.
- Align the release cam by inserting the lock pin or a special tool into the holes in the cam and solenoid bracket. Refer to step 4 of "Brake (Key) Interlock Cable Installation".
- Connect the cable end to the key release cam referring to steps 5 and 6 of "Brake (Key) Interlock Cable Installation". See Fig 15 .
- Remove the special tool or lock pin from the key release cam.
- Make sure that the key release cam and interlock cable operate properly, referring to steps 7-10 in the "Interlock Cable Installation" section.
- Reconnect the electrical connectors to the shift solenoid and illumination lamp.
- Reinstall the select indicator and center console.
- Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
- Check that the brake (key) interlock system is operating properly.
