Starter Solenoid Hold-In & Return Test

  1. Ensure field coil lead wire is disconnected from starter solenoid. See Figure . Connect battery voltage and ground to starter, as when performing starter solenoid pull-in test. See Figure .
  2. Once drive pinion moves outward, toward front of starter, disconnect jumper wire from terminal "M" on starter solenoid. See Figure . Drive pinion should remain outward, toward front of starter. Replace starter solenoid if drive pinion does not remain outward.
  3. Disconnect jumper wire from negative battery terminal at the starter. Drive pinion should move inward, toward rear of starter. Replace starter solenoid if drive pinion does not move inward.
