April 5, 2026: LEMON Manuals is launched! Read the announcement.

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove and inspect IG fuse. Replace fuse as needed. Clear DTCs and recheck. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select F0: DATA LIST mode. Monitor 4WD switch status while shifting transfer case from 2WD to 4WD. If scan tool displays "4WD switch ON" and "4WD light circuit ON", go to step  4 . If scan tool does not display "4WD switch ON" and "4WD light circuit ON", go to next step.
  3. If 4WD indicator light on instrument cluster (combination meter) is illuminated, go to step  8 . If 4WD indicator light is not illuminated, go to step  5 .
  4. Clear DTCs and recheck. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If DTC 96 resets, repeat step  3 . If DTC 96 does not reset, system is currently functioning correctly. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  .
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove instrument cluster (combination meter). Remove and inspect 4WD indicator bulb and filament. Replace as needed. If bulb is okay, go to next step.
  6. Inspect instrument cluster (combination meter) 13-pin harness connector for poor contact, printed circuit board for an open 4WD indicator light circuit and an open or high resistance in power feed circuit between fuse and instrument cluster. If no indication of an open circuit is present, go to next step. If an open circuit is indicated, repair open circuit or source of high resistance. Replace circuit board as needed.
  7. Disconnect 4WD switch harness connector. Ensure transfer case is in 4WD position. Measure resistance between 4WD switch terminals. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 2 ohms, replace 4WD switch.
  8. Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Disconnect 32-pin EBCM harness connector. Measure resistance of Orange/Black wire between 4WD switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and 32-pin EBCM harness connector terminal No. 6. If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not less than 2 ohms, repair open or high resistance in Orange/Black wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  9. Install combination meter. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and 32-pin EBCM harness connector terminal No. 6 (Orange/Black wire). If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open or high resistance in Orange/Black wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If voltage is not less than 10 volts, reconnect all connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If DTC 96 resets, replace EBCM.
