DTC P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Malfunction

  1. Test drive vehicle. Observe speedometer. If speedometer operates, go to next step. If speedometer does not operate, check speedometer cable and gears for damage. Repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector "C". Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and PCM harness connector "C", terminal No. 11. Raise and support front of vehicle. Block right front tire. Turn left front tire slowly while observing ohmmeter. If reading toggles between zero and infinity as wheel turns, check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article. If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Remove instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANEL article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIP section. Connect an ohmmeter between terminals of VSS at instrument cluster. See Fig 1 . Observe ohmmeter while turning speedometer head. If reading toggles between zero and infinity 4 times with one revolution of speedometer head, check Yellow/Green wire and Black/Blue wire for an open or short. Repair as necessary. If reading is not as specified, replace VSS. Retest system.
