Differential Assembly: Reassembly

  1. Install thrust washers and side gears. Install pinion gears and thrust washers. Install pinion shaft.
  2. Install differential carrier in a soft-jawed vise. Apply measuring tip of dial indicator to top surface of side gears. Move side gears up and down. See Figure. Thrust play should be .002-.013" (.05-.33 mm). Select and install suitable thrust washers to obtain specified thrust play. Thrust washers are available in thicknesses of .035-.047" (.90-1.20 mm) in .002" (.05) increments.
  3. Drive in pinion shaft roll pin until flush with case. Install speedometer drive gear. Using appropriate bearing installer, press on both LH and RH bearings. Apply Loctite to ring gear bolts. Install ring gear on differential carrier and torque bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 N.m).
