Scrapped Vehicle

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Suzuki Swift and 1995 Geo Metro. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Use following procedure to deploy inflator module(s) in a vehicle which is to be scrapped.

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position, remove key, and put on safety goggles. DO NOT  remove safety goggles until after disposing of deployed inflator modules. Remove any loose objects from front seat of vehicle.
  2. Remove steering wheel side cap and disconnect driver-side inflator module. Cut connector from coil side of harness, leaving at least 6 inches of wire at connector. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from each wire of removed connector.
  3. Cut two 15 foot lengths of 18 gauge (or heavier) wire to be used to make driver-side inflator deployment harness. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from both ends of each wire. Short wires by twisting together one end of each.
  4. Twist together free end of one wire to free end of one of connector wires. Bend twisted wire flat against joined wires and insulate connection with electrical tape. Repeat this step using other two wires. See Fig 1 .

CAUTION: Deployment wires must remain shorted together until air bag is to be deployed. Air bag will deploy immediately when deployment harness is connected to a power source.
  5. Connect deployment harness to Yellow driver-side inflator connector. Route deployment harness out driver-side of vehicle.
  6. Disconnect passenger-side inflator module and cut off harness side of Yellow inflator module connector leaving at least 6 inches of wire on connector end. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from Yellow and Yellow/Red wires.
  7. Cut two 20 foot lengths of 18 gauge (or heavier) wire to be used to make passenger inflator deployment harness. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation from both ends of each wire. Short wires by twisting together one end of each.
  8. Twist together free end of one wire to free end of Yellow connector wire. Bend twisted wires flat against joined wires and insulate connection with electrical tape. Repeat this step using other two wires.
CAUTION: Deployment wires must remain shorted together until air bag is to be deployed. Air bag will deploy immediately when deployment harness is connected to a power source.
  9. Connect deployment harness to Yellow passenger-side inflator module connector and route harness out passenger-side of vehicle.
  10. Be sure that no people or flammable materials are inside or near vehicle.
  11. Stretch both deployment harnesses to their full lengths and cover windshield and front window areas with a blanket or drop cloth. This will help reduce risk of injury in event of glass fragmentation during deployment.
  12. Notify anyone in work place that you will be deploying inflator modules momentarily and that there will be a loud, sudden noise.
  13. Separate shorted ends of driver-side inflator deployment harness and connect them to a fully charged 12-volt automotive battery. Driver-side inflator module will deploy immediately.
  14. Separate shorted ends of passenger-side inflator module deployment harness and connect them to a fully charged 12-volt automotive battery. passenger-side inflator module will deploy immediately.
  15. Allow inflator modules to cool for at least 10 minutes before attempting to handle them. Carefully remove blanket or drop cloth from vehicle and discard it or clean off any particles which may cling to its surface. Vehicle may now be scrapped in a conventional manner.
