Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Test drive vehicle. Using scan tool, select DATA LIST. While decelerating from 35 to zero MPH, monitor all wheel speed inputs. If any wheel speed input is erratic or intermittent, go to DTC 21/22: LEFT FRONT/RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SPEED EQUALS ZERO OR UNREASONABLE & DTC 32/33: LEFT FRONT/RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT OPEN OR SHORTED  or DTC 24: REAR WHEEL SPEED EQUALS ZERO OR UNREASONABLE; DTC 28: REAR EXCESSIVE WHEEL SPEED VARIATION DTC 28: REAR EXCESSIVE WHEEL SPEED VARIATION & DTC 35: REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT OPEN OR SHORTED  for suspect wheel. If all wheel speed inputs appear acceptable, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Raise and support rear of vehicle. On 4WD models, make sure transfer shift lever is in "2H" position. Ensure both rear wheels can be spun freely by hand. If either does not spin freely, inspect and repair cause of resistance. If rear brake system is okay, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS. Using manual control, select rear motor apply function. Apply firm pressure on brake pedal. Using scan tool, apply rear motor and have assistant try to spin rear wheels by hand. If both rear wheels could be spun by hand, go to next step. If both rear wheels could not be spun by hand, system is currently functioning correctly. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  .
  4. With firm pressure still applied to brake pedal, use scan tool to command release of rear motor and have assistant try to spin rear wheels by hand. If assistant can turn rear wheels, go to next step. If assistant cannot turn rear wheels, rear motor circuit wires may be crossed. Inspect and repair wires as needed. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Using scan tool, perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF FUNCTION. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove ABS actuator assembly. See ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Separate motor pack from hydraulic modulator. Connect motor pack wiring. Turn ignition switch ON. Using scan tool, perform motor test. If all 3 motor pack gears (small gears) spin freely, replace hydraulic modulator. If all 3 motor pack gears (small gears) do not spin freely, replace motor pack.
