Upper Case & Shifter Assembly: Disassembly

  1. Remove back-up light switch, 3 locating spring bolts and set washers, locating springs and locating balls from upper case. See Figure . Place all shift shafts in Neutral position.
  2. Drive out spring pin and remove low speed gear shift fork and shaft. Drive out spring pin and remove high speed gear shift fork and shaft. Remove reverse gear shift shaft from upper case.
  3. Drive out spring pin and remove reverse gear shift fork from shaft. Remove 2 rubber plugs and interlock balls from upper case. Drive out interlock pin from high speed gear shift shaft. See Figure and Figure . Inspection Using a dial caliper, measure free length of locating springs. Length should be .945-1.063" (24.0-27.0 mm). Replace spring if length is less than .945" (24.0 mm).
NOTE: On some models, shift fork pins may be different lengths. If one pin is longer than the other two, use longer pin on the reverse gear shift fork only. When installing the longer reverse gear shift fork pin, press pin into fork until .138-.177" (3.5-4.5 mm) protrudes from top of fork. See Figure .
