Brake Pedal Free Play

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Suzuki Sidekick. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. With engine off, depress brake pedal several times to exhaust vacuum from power brake unit. Depress brake pedal and measure brake pedal travel until initial resistance is felt.
  2. Brake pedal free play should be .04-.32" (1.0-8.0 mm). If brake pedal free play is not within specification, check stoplight switch for proper adjustment. See STOPLIGHT SWITCH ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  3. If stoplight adjustment is okay, check brake pedal push rod and master cylinder pin for looseness. If brake pedal push rod and master cylinder pin are okay, check brake pedal height. See PEDAL HEIGHT under ADJUSTMENTS.
