Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Test drive vehicle. Using scan tool, select DATA LIST. While decelerating from 35 to zero MPH, monitor all wheel speed inputs. If any wheel speed input is erratic or intermittent, go to DTC 21/22: LEFT FRONT/RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SPEED EQUALS ZERO OR UNREASONABLE & DTC 32/33: LEFT FRONT/RIGHT FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT OPEN OR SHORTED  or DTC 24: REAR WHEEL SPEED EQUALS ZERO OR UNREASONABLE; DTC 28: REAR EXCESSIVE WHEEL SPEED VARIATION DTC 28: REAR EXCESSIVE WHEEL SPEED VARIATION & DTC 35: REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT OPEN OR SHORTED  for suspect wheel. If all wheel speed inputs appear acceptable, go to next step.
  2. Stop engine. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS. Using manual control, select suspect front motor apply function and apply motor. Apply firm pressure on brake pedal. Select suspect front motor release function and release motor. If brake pedal does not fall, go to step  6 . If brake pedal does not fall, go to next step.
  3. Release brake pedal. Select suspect front solenoid apply function and energize solenoid. Apply firm pressure to brake pedal. If brake pedal falls, go to step  5 . If pedal does not fall, go to next step.
  4. Maintain firm pressure on brake pedal. Using scan tool, command suspect front solenoid off. If pedal falls, system is currently functioning correctly. See INTERMITTENT OR POOR CONNECTIONS  . If pedal does not fall, go to next step.
  5. Switch suspect front solenoid with opposite front solenoid and repeat step 4)  . If brake pedal falls, use scan tool to perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF FUNCTION. Replace hydraulic modulator. See ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If brake pedal does not fall, replace suspect front solenoid.
  6. If brake pedal did not move in step 2)  , go to next step. If brake pedal did move in step 2)  , go to step  8 .
  7. If brake pedal did move in step 2)  , repair crossed wires to suspect front ABS motor circuit. If brake pedal did not move in step 2)  , repeat step 2)  .
  8. Using scan tool, select ABS TESTS and perform GEAR TENSION RELIEF FUNCTION. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove ABS actuator assembly. See ABS ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Separate motor pack from hydraulic modulator. Attempt to manually move suspect front gear on hydraulic modulator gear in either direction. If gear can be moved by hand, replace motor pack. If gear cannot be moved by hand, replace hydraulic modulator.
