DTC P1705: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Signal Input Circuit Fault: Notes

NOTE: DTC P1705 will set when the following coolant temperature signals are detected by the TCM while engine is running:
  1. If DTCs P0117 or P0118 are currently set in PCM, diagnose these DTCs first. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
    • G - TESTS W/CODES - Geo Tracker
    • G - TESTS W/CODES - 1.6L - Suzuki
    • G - TESTS W/CODES - 1.8L - Suzuki

If specified DTCs are not currently set, go to next step.

  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect 22-pin PCM harness connector. Disconnect main relay, located at center of instrument panel, behind blower speed selector switch. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and 22-pin PCM harness connector terminal No. 16 (terminal No. 17 on Sidekick 1.8L) (Pink/Green wire). If reading is 10-14 volts, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, go to step 5).
  3. Inspect 22-pin PCM harness connector terminal No. 16 (terminal No. 17 on Sidekick 1.8L) (Pink/Green wire) for poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary and retest system. If connection is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Reconnect main relay and PCM harness connector. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and run for 15 minutes. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC P1705 resets, replace PCM. If DTC P1705 does not reset, fault is not present at this time. Check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
  5. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and 22-pin PCM harness connector terminal No. 16 (terminal No. 17 on Sidekick 1.8L) (Pink/Green wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, repair Pink/Green wire for a short to ground between PCM and TCM. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  6. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between 22-pin PCM harness connector terminal No. 16 (terminal No. 17 on Sidekick 1.8L) (Pink/Green wire) and TCM harness connector terminal No. 1 (Pink/Green wire). If resistance is less than 2 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in Pink/Green wire between PCM and TCM.
  7. Reconnect TCM and PCM harness connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and run for 15 minutes. Recheck for DTCs. If DTC P1705 resets, replace TCM. If DTC P1705 does not reset, fault is not present at this time. Check for an intermittent problem. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
