Bleeding Procedures

NOTE: Frequently check brake fluid level in master cylinder during bleeding sequence. Once fluid flows from both hydraulic modulator bleed valves, hydraulic modulator is sufficiently full of fluid, but may not be completely free of air. Bleed wheel cylinders/calipers to ensure low points in system are free of air, then hydraulic modulator can be purged of any remaining air.
CAUTION: DO NOT release brake pedal until bleeder screw has been tightened.
  1. Using Tech 1 or Suzuki scan tool, re-home ABS motors. See BLEEDING PRECAUTIONS  . Clean master cylinder cap and surrounding area, then remove cap. Fill master cylinder and install cap.
  2. Attach clear vinyl bleeder hose to bleeder valve "A" on hydraulic modulator assembly. See Fig 1 . Place other end of hose in clean, transparent container. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid until end of hose is submerged in fluid. Pump brake pedal several times and hold pedal down.
  3. With brake pedal depressed, open bleeder valve "A" 1/3-1/2 turn. Tighten bleeder valve to specification and release brake pedal. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Repeat procedure until flow of brake fluid is clear and bubble free. Repeat procedure to bleed hydraulic modulator bleeder valve "B". When fluid flows from both hydraulic modulator bleeder valves, go to next step.
  4. Ensure master cylinder is full. Install clear vinyl bleeder hose on left rear wheel bleeder screw. Place other end of hose in clean, transparent container. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid so end of hose is submerged in fluid. Depress brake pedal several times, then depress and hold brake pedal. With brake pedal depressed, open bleeder screw on left rear wheel 1/3-1/2 turn.
  5. Close bleeder screw, and release pedal. Repeat procedure until flow of brake fluid is clear and bubble free. Proceed to right front, then left front wheels. Add brake fluid to master cylinder after bleeding all wheels. After bleeding calipers and wheel cylinder, repeat steps  2 and  3 to bleed air from ABS actuator assembly.
  6. Turn ignition on. Depress brake pedal with moderate force and hold in position. Note pedal travel and feel. If pedal travel feels firm and constant, go to next step. If pedal feels soft or has excessive travel either initially or after starting engine, go to step  8 .
  7. Road test vehicle. Make several normal (non-ABS) stops from moderate speed to ensure proper brake function.
  8. Using Tech 1 or Suzuki scan tool, release then apply motors 3 times and cycle solenoids 10 times. Apply motors to ensure pistons are in the home position. Repeat entire bleeding procedure.
