Description & Operation: Introduction
Transaxle consists of a lock-up torque converter, oil pump, valve body assembly, 4 multi-disc clutch assemblies, 2 planetary gear sets, one multi-disc clutch style brake and 2 one-way clutches. See Fig 1 .
The Esteem 4-speed overdrive (OD) transaxle is electronically controlled. Transaxle shifting and torque converter lock-up are controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM), 2 shift solenoids and a Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) control solenoid valve. For diagnosing transaxle electronic control systems, on 1995 Esteem, see SUZUKI ESTEEM ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article. For diagnosing transaxle electronic control systems on 1996 Esteem, see SUZUKI ESTEEM ELECTRONIC CONTROLS artcile.
The TCM receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control TCC control solenoid valve, and shift solenoids No. 1 and 2 on transaxle valve body. Solenoids are responsible for transaxle shifting and TCC apply (lock-up). An O/D cut switch (mounted on gear selector lever) is used to select OD gear.
