Oil Pump: Inspection

  1. Push driven gear to one side of pump body. Using a feeler gauge, check pump body-to-driven gear clearance. See Figure . Specified standard clearance is .003-.006" (.08-.15 mm). Replace oil pump gears if clearance exceeds service limit of .011" (.280 mm).
  2. Using a feeler gauge, measure tip clearance between drive and driven gears. See Figure . Measure radial clearance between drive gear tooth and oil pump crescent. Specified standard clearance is .0005-.010" (.013-.254 mm). Replace oil pump gears if clearance exceeds service limit of .011" (.280 mm).
  3. Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, measure pump body-to-gear side clearance. See Figure . Specified standard clearance is .0008-.0019" (.020-.048 mm). Replace oil pump gears if clearance exceeds specification by .0039" (.100 mm).
NOTE: Oil pump gears are available in 5 sizes and range in thickness from .3717-.3736" (9.441-9.489 mm). Replace oil pump body or stator shaft subassembly if specified side clearance cannot be obtained with thickest gear set.
